We just had a new grandbaby born into our lives!! It’s so exciting! We’re all in love with this tiny little person! Now that he’s here, we can’t imagine life without him. His parents’ lives will never be the same again!! Yet it took a lot of intense labor to get him here! I felt so bad for my daughter-in-law who went through so much as she birthed him. It was a very difficult delivery (on those of us standing by as well!) Yet it was all worth it to hold that new life in our hands and bask in the miracle! He didn’t even exist 9 months ago! We didn’t have a clue we could all love him so much!
We had a good friend dying that same day. He was laboring as well. Friends and family were standing around supporting him also. Yet just like with my daughter-in-law, others can cheer you on…but some things you have to go through by yourself. We received a text at the exact time the baby was born that our friend had just passed through the canal of this life into the next! He, too, has new life to live! I’ve often thought that trying to explain how much someone is going to enjoy heaven is like trying to tell an unborn baby how much he’s going to like earth. We can speak to the mom’s belly and say, “You’re gonna love it here- ice cream, swimming, snowflakes on your tongue…!” But that baby is going to dig his feet in and say, “No thanks! I like it right here in Mommy’s womb! It’s warm and cozy and I have everything I need!” In a lot of ways, we don’t want to leave our comfy home of this world to experience the marvels of heaven!
Come to think of it, Lord, we don’t just labor during birth or dying. There is often a laboring to surrender our lives to You and receive eternal life through Jesus Christ. We also have to labor through a lot of trials and challenges but if we will just hold Your hand and breathe- we will find more abundant life at the end of the pain and struggle. Once we have the new life, we can barely recall the pain! Thank You, Lord, for being our labor partner. Most of all, thank You for the new life!
“A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born, she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world, So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” John 16:21-22
“You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these things are the beginning of birth pains.” Matthew 24:6-8
“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when His glory is revealed.” 1 Peter 4:12-13
