Heavenly Father,

There was a whole different standard of delivering the news when I was younger.  It might have been more boring, but reporters knew they had to have several sources to validate their facts before publicly broadcasting something as the truth. If something was reported as news, it needed to be substantiated before it could destroy someone’s life, or cause chaos and division. The more addicted our culture has become to drama and entertainment, the more “news reports” have evolved into rapid sound bites, quick clips, tainted and slanted opinions and analysis, and half truths or full-out lies designed to grab the largest audience. Apparently bad news gets a whole lot more attention than good news so our view of the world we live in can easily skewed and feel out of control and hopeless. Of course, we really do have to deal with the reality of bad news and good news…

The bad news is…there is a lot of real evil in this world—people will use, kill, abuse, destroy other people’s lives for their own selfish motives.  This world is full of lies, gossip, slander, malice and manipulation that will devour others.  There are wars, movements, groups, and individuals who stir up hatred and division and trouble. Innocent lives are killed, maimed, deeply wounded from disregard for anyone else. Suicide, depression and hopelessness threaten to drown out the goodness. The bad news is that we are all part of the bad news. There is not even one single solitary soul who is without sin. That means not one of is free from the penalty of sin which is death. Not even one of us will ever be holy and pure enough to live in peace with God Almighty forever. Now, that is BAD news! The worse news ever!

The GOOD News is that You didn’t leave Your people to self-destruct. Lord, You made a way where there was no way. You delivered the Best News ever when You sent Your own holy and pure Son Jesus to die so our sins are forgiven! Even though He was “God in the flesh,” He was also the Son of man, fully capable of sinning and yet He did not. He knew Jesus was the only One who could walk through this sinful world untarnished, able to resist temptation so He could be the perfect sacrifice for our sin. The Good news is it is finished and we are guaranteed eternal life with You where there will never be bad news at all. All we have to do is believe and accept the BEST GOOD NEWS ever. The bad news is we stand condemned by our own choice when we do not choose the Good News. Father, I will focus on the good news and report the truth to whoever will listen and accept.

“An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”   Luke 2:9-11

“You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.”   Acts 10:36

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.”   John 3:16-19

Your Prayer Prompt-

Father God,  am I still living under the bad news …or am I ready to listen and believe in the Best news ever?…

Most Holy Father God,

I do not trust my eyes. They tend to wander in their gaze. Something catches my attention and can lead me off course. My sense of balance depends on where I fix my gaze. I am one of those who, if I’m not careful, when I’m driving (or even walking), if I start looking at the scenery—my feet tend to follow the direction my eyesight is wandering to. I can easily trip or drive off into a ditch. If I watch worldly news, I can get caught up in the hopelessness of how things appear. If my eyes soak up too much social media, I began to see and believe what the enemy wants me to. Oh! But, Lord, when I look to You….

When I look to You, the dark clouds roll away! The problems of this life which completely obstruct my vision begin to vaporize as I gaze at Your glory! The funny thing is that I can’t truly see You with my weak human eyes; I have to look through faith at what my fleshly eyes can’t see. Yet I see so much more clearly when I do! Everything becomes much more clear and real—even more real than what I think I see in this world. But it is up to me to look towards You. Some days, I have to physically fight myself to turn my face back to You. I recall once, when I actually felt Your hand lift my gaze from despair toward You. But You want me to train myself to do it on a regular basis.

Today, I am purposely turning my eyes back to You! You are the Great I Am! You are true when lies abound. You are Beauty, Glory and Majesty. You reign above all else. You are the Beginning and the End because You are Eternal. You are the Light in utter darkness. You are Life and Love. You make life purposeful, full of goodness. You restore my soul. You are patient and tender-hearted towards my weakness. Everything changes when I look at You. I see You, this world and even all those around me through the loving eyes of Jesus Christ. One day, I will no longer need these weak unfaithful eyes to see You for all eternity…but for now, I will keep practicing turning my sight towards You. I love You, Lord!

Your Prayer Prompt-

Father, forgive my wondering eyes. Help me turn to seek You…

Most Gracious Heavenly Father,
This world is so noisy and full of chaos. Non-stop news consistently tries to rattle our nerves. Continuous conversations on social media and cell phones clamor for our attention and response. Deadlines, arguments over issues, conflicting reports, background noise, and earphones always filling our thoughts with subliminal messages. In fact, it seems most people are so used to noise, they feel uncomfortable with silence, but it can be soothing to the soul.

Even prayer can be so crammed with requests and words that we leave prayer before being still and ready to hear You, Lord. Forgive us for always be too distracted to sit and enjoy Your presence, for being so busy talking or writing our prayers that we never stop to listen to You. It is good to sing songs and praise You with loud cymbals and music, but we also need to just be quiet and still sometimes.

It is so sweet to simply sit outside in the quiet of the day and bask in Your glory, to soak up Your goodness, to savor Your company, and just know that You are God. I can spill out many words and when I slow down to take a breath, You can say so much in the silence.

Your peace pours over me and Your tender presence reassures me. You restore my soul as I simply revel in who You are. All the fears, worries and trials of this noisy life melt away in the stillness of Your quiet presence. All that vital information everyone else is screaming at me dissolves in the wisdom found in Your quiet presence. How I love You, Lord. You are the Maker and Sustainer of all. You know all things and have all we need. Help us be still and quiet so we can hear You above all the noise of this chaotic world.

Your Prayer Prompt-
Lord Jesus, help me be still…

Most Glorious Heavenly Father,
I grew up busy. Our family operated a huge greenhouse and nursery business so there was always a ton of hard work to do…plus the added activities of church, 4-H and school with lots and lots of meaningful volunteer work. Yet in all that busyness, I often felt Your still small voice calling me to be still and just be with You. As a young girl, I can still recall the peace of being outside and feeling Your breath in the wind circling round and caressing my face, or Your tender way of pointing out the incredible wonders You surrounded me with. Those were precious glimpses of my safe place in You!

Then I would get called back into the duties, chores and planning great projects in my daily life. There was always so much to do and it seemed not enough time to do it… so many deadlines, expectations and my own endless “to-do lists.” In most people’s eyes, I was an incredibly productive person…yet I still caught those sweet moments of pure peace where I could simply enjoy a simple walk in the country or sit still while others fished…moments where I could just be still in Your presence.

It seemed right at the peak of a very worthwhile ministry which involved sharing Your word with children all summer, unforeseen circumstances changed everything. Due to my young husband’s ever-increasing traumatic illness, we were called away from the world and shut up in our own home. I recall asking You why! It didn’t make sense to shut down what appeared to be a very effective ministry and lead us into virtual isolation. Yet the longer we went through the crisis, the more I needed You, the more I cried out to You, the more I lived for those times I could share it all with You—I found all I needed in my shelter alone with You.

There were times I fought against that long-extended isolation with You. The deeper the trauma became, the more I depended on my safe shelter in You. How I thank You, Lord, for sending Jesus so I can live with You now and forever more. The sacrifice of His pure blood has made it possible for me to come to You wherever I am, whatever is going on. You love me—not for how productive I am—but for who I am. You still send me out on missions, but it is a restful work that depends on You and the time I spend alone with You. I love You, Lord. You are my safe place and my life! Wherever you send me, I can shelter-in-place with You.

Good Friday Prayer Watch

Friday, April 10, 2020

It is our deepest prayer that this Good Friday Prayer Watch will draw You closer to our Heavenly Father. Use this specific time to set aside just for Him. The world has been almost stopped by this pandemic. Maybe it is time for us all to stop, be still and know that The Lord is our God. We know that as we draw close to Him, He will reveal Himself to us. He said that when we seek Him, we will find Him! Let this be your time to seek Him!

When we have set up the Good Friday Prayer Watch before, a special room was set up for people to pray in without disruption. One of the things that has made the Prayer Watch special is shutting yourself up away with the Lord with no interruptions. Because of the Pandemic, it will be up to you to set aside a specific place where you can be alone with the Lord. It might be in your backyard, in your bedroom or by the lake. Print off or take the prayer guide with you. Let others in your family know not to bother you…or do this as a family with no talking between one another. This is between you and God.

Feel free to stand up and walk around to pray, or kneel before the cross. You may want to take communion with our Lord. You may want to pray out loud or sing! You may want to lay flat on the floor on Your face before God. Or all of these! It’s OK! This is precious holy time you are devoting just to be with your Lord.

Have a very blessed Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday and an ever-growing prayer life with our Lord!

Praising a Victorious Lord!

Father, You specifically say that You will heal our land if we (Your people who are called by Your name) humble ourselves, turn from our wicked ways, pray and seek Your face. Father, forgive me for judging everyone else, when I should be on my knees before You, asking You to cleanse me. Father, forgive me for not praying. Forgive me for not praying for my country. The Light of the World and the Salt of the earth

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. …” Matthew 5:13-16

Father, it’s hard to believe Jesus calls us the light of the world and the salt of the earth! Show me how I can be that this week!
How can I shine out with Jesus Christ in my home?

How can I bring Your holiness to my work and school?

How can I bring hope to my neighbors?

What specific ways can I be light instead of darkness in my church?

How my thoughts, actions and words bring light to the world?

Father, You are the Light! Help me stay filled with the Light by…

In Jesus’ Lap

Father, You say I am Your child. How can I act more like Your child?

Listening

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” John 10:27-28

Forgive me, Lord, for listening to too many other people, books, media, peer pressure, and information instead of consistently being still with You and waiting for You. What can I give up to have more time being quiet with You….

“Be Still and know that I am God!”

Heavenly Father,
This past week, I have been fighting for my faith in You to win over the onslaught of reasons to fear. In the midst of ongoing pandemic news reports that are trying to cause everyone in the whole world to fear, we were told my husband had a substantial blockage to his heart which was life-threatening and need to be taken care of quickly. Having had my first husband die from his heart brought on by Lupus, and dear friends who died recently without warning, the arrows of fear started their non-stop barrage. Because of the pandemic, it took longer to set up a heart cath to take care of the blockage. In the meantime, my husband’s symptoms took a sudden turn for the worse. I truly wondered if he would even make it to the heart cath. So I fought through the attacks of fear about my husband’s life along with the worries about the pandemic with prayer and looking to You instead of the ways things look.

The more I looked to You, the more the fear lost its power. My husband’s symptoms hadn’t gone away. In fact, they looked worse. The pandemic hadn’t gone away. It loomed larger than ever, but as I praised You and shared with You, everything seemed like it would be OK no matter how things looked. Even if my husband died, I knew You were still Lord! Even if many in my large family have lost jobs or their businesses are highly affected by this pandemic…even if many of my friends and family work in the health care field during this risky time…even if my beloved family-in-Christ cannot gather to meet right now…even though leaders on all levels are having to make tough decisions that impact so many lives right now…even if I cannot hug those I love…even through suffering and death…

You are God! You reign victorious! You are doing great things! It may look like death and chaos and fear are running ramped, but when we stop and look to You, we realize all is well. It may still look overwhelming, but when we look to You and not at the way things look to our human eyes, it is incredible what we begin to see. By the time my husband’s heart cath was here last Monday, I had prayed almost non-stop. As I sat alone (yet with You) in the parking lot, I couldn’t even make myself work up a fear! Nothing had changed. My husband had scary symptoms all the way up to entering that building alone. But my faith was in You, O Lord! I was still more than surprised when the cardiologist called to tell me they found nothing worth even putting a stent in or anything else done to his heart. All the symptoms were gone after he came out! Praise You, Lord!!!

Help us all to walk through our faith in You and not by how things look all around us! You are doing a new thing in many lives! How I praise You!!!! When we are tempted to look at the way things look, help us fight through it to look to You instead!

“Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:6-8

“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life–of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1

Your Prayer Prompt-
Lord, help me to look to you no matter how menacing things look…

Glorious Heavenly Father,
We can never get to the bottom of Your love! Your love and power go far beyond what we could ever get away from. Your everlasting love fills every bit of heaven and earth and space itself. Your love created all that there is and ever will be. Your love knew us and thought of us long before we were even conceived. You have loved us for generations and will keep loving us for all eternity. You loved us before we ever took our first breath and will still be loving us when we take our last. You will love us when we no longer need breath—but will live on Your love alone. There is never a time You don’t love us even when we have not loved You…even when we have sinned against You. Your love is all-encompassing and bigger and mightier than we can ever comprehend.

You love us when we disappoint You, when we rebel against You, when we complain, when we hurt others whom You love…You love us when we neglect You, when we try to live our lives without You, when we think we know better than You, when we hear Your calling and turn our backs, when we think we have You all figured out, when we put our faith in other short-lived things besides You, when we love this world and all its temptations more than You, when we choose hate and judgement instead of love and grace, when we doubt our worth when You love us so much, when we believe in ourselves instead of Your eternal power and glory.

The only thing that blocks our receiving Your eternal love is our own selfish will which refuses to accept the eternal love You sent us through Jesus Christ. When we finally surrender our own selfish will and accept the greatest gift of love You’ve ever given in Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, our eyes are opened. We begin to see and believe in Your love. We can count on You, trust You, hold fast to You, Lord. Your love forgives us, renews us, restores us, teaches us, molds us, prunes us, holds us, guides us, corrects us, encourages us, emboldens us, empowers us, humbles us, works through us…

I will never ever stop discovering more of Your love. For all eternity, I will be falling more deeply in love with You, Lord. I can see Your Love because Christ lives in me and even loves through me. I can only love You because You loved me first. I can only love others because Your love lives and grows in me. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8) All love flows from You, Lord…and there is no end to who You are! How rich it is to live in Your eternal love. and to love You back with my feeble yet ever-growing love!

Your Prayer Prompt-
Father, I accept the love You gave me through Jesus Christ…Help me grow in Your love…

Most Glorious Heavenly Father,
How I love watching for You! Just in the last few days I’ve seen You in a tiny clump of yellow crocus in an expansive lawn of still-dormant grass…in the opening up of a traumatized friend…in families gathering together in love at the passing of family members…in friends gathering to help a widow…in a dove peering out of a bush right outside my window…in a granddaughter running up and practically jumping in my arms…in light whisp of clouds that I saw when I looked up- just like the ones in a very poignant 27-year old memory I had just written about…

Just in the last few days, though I have not seen Your face, I have seen You in the praise of one who has endured much…in laughter shared with a long-time friend…in contentment and rest in the soul of a mother who has worked extremely hard all her life…in the gratitude of someone You asked me to help…in the hope of spring coming again…in the cheerful morning praises sung by the birds…in the connection felt with a simple smile and greeting between strangers…in the healing of one who has been quietly grieving his wife for five long years…in the hope of a new marriage of two dear friends…in the waiting for a new baby soon to be born…

In just the last few days, I have seen You bring faithful believers to a state-wide gathering to pray for our state… in the fervent prayers of those praying daily on the sidewalk for the unborn and their parents…in the celebration of a dear friend from India who has faithfully poured out his life to thousands in his country and around the world…in his daughter who is willing to take up the vision and carry it on…in the sacrifice and love of young parents on behalf of their children…in the dedication of teachers in caring for their little ones…in my husband massaging my aching feet…

Just in the last few days, I’ve seen You in a couple who have run their family’s 102 year old business with Christ-like integrity and love as they handed it over to a new owner…in the life of two pastors’ wives who are recently widowed, still shining out with the same quiet faith and love for You which has been their life testimony…in the commitment of one friend caring for their aging friend…in a young sister-in-Christ quietly waiting and praying for guidance from You…

Father, I love to watch for You and there are so many more ways I have seen You in just the last few days…I can’t begin to imagine all You have done in my lifetime that I didn’t stop to notice. I will be watching and praising You for all eternity!

Your Prayer Prompt-
Heavenly Father, open my eyes as I seek You….

Heavenly Father,

Even though I was young, when I first heard Martin Luther King’s dream of all Your children playing and living together someday in peace, I knew this is how You want it to be. It sounded perfect, but like many dreams, it takes a lot blood, sweat and tears for it to come true. It often takes someone’s earthly life like it did Dr. King’s. In my lifetime, I have seen huge advances toward that dream becoming reality…and yet I don’t know that it will be fully realized in our present earthly lives. Our sinful nature finds too many reasons to prejudge by one another’s appearance, to be divided, and even to hate for the smallest differences.

Lord, You spell out Your own dream (actually a promise) in the last book of the Bible in Revelation 7:9—”After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.” You gave us a glimpse into the new heaven and new earth where all Your people are praising You in one voice—with one spirit—in one love. Jesus was willing to give up His life for our oneness with Him and with You, Lord.

Our love for You, as we more fully realize Your love for us, will spill over for love for one another. Oh Lord, how I long for that day! Just when I think I am making headway towards this fullness of love, You expose some way I still let something divide my love for others. Lord, Your love is pure, holy, perfect, all-encompassing—even for those who disrespect the very One who gives them everything—the very One who sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for us while we were full of sin. There is no greater love!

Father, I will not be able to end hate, prejudice, racial or other types of divisions here on earth, but I surely can let Your love rule in me. Here I am, Lord, will You continue to create in me a clean heart that loves the unworthy, those who hate me, those who hurt my loved ones, those who misjudge me, those who sin against You. Let my heart and spirit be one with You because of Jesus…and let me give others a glimpse of all Your people praising You in the white robes that only Jesus gives us as we acknowledge Him as our personal Lord and Savior.

Your Prayer Prompt-
Father, use me to help bring Your dream/promise of oneness of Your kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven…

Most Glorious Father,
How I love my quiet time with You. There can be sparks of war, reports of violence near and far, deaths of loved ones, misunderstandings, relationships divided or under attack, threats of bad health or uncertainty of finance…but when I come to You to simply be in Your presence, it all melts away in Your glory and peace. There are times, the attacks of bad news and the veil of darkness are so palpable that I have to fight my way to my sweet spot in You. But You are always there waiting for me to come. When I find my way to You through Jesus, I find all I need in You. Your quiet peace is so much more powerful than all the noise the blustery bullying that evil makes. Here I come once again to You, Lord!

You are and ever will be victorious over anything this world and darkness throws at us. All we have to do is be still and know that You are God! Father, You are fully aware of how weak we are, how vulnerable we are to the threats and attacks. How I thank You for all I have been through which has taught me over and over again, to come to You through Jesus Christ. Some days I just breathe and remain in You all day. Other times, the struggle is real and the attacks come from all directions trying to keep me from You.

Some days, it appears I have to fight to get to my sweet spot in You. At least that’s what the enemy wants me to think—that the battle is too big; that Your silence means You are gone—but You never leave me, Lord. I just need to place my focus, my hope, my life on You and Your presence once again. The best way I have found to fight my way to You is to be still, to praise You, to remember who You are, to seek You with all my heart, mind and strength—the Lord God who is over me and all that is. You are the One who commands heaven and earth. You are the One who loves me more than anyone else possibly could. You are the One who restores my soul, fills me with Your Holy Spirit, uses little ole me to defeat giants. You are the One who refreshes me in Your sweet presence even here on earth and who promises an eternal sweet spot with You that I will never have to leave! It seems a little silly to call You my sweet spot, Lord- I am but a beloved little speck in the vastness of Your Holy Presence! There is plenty of room in Your Holy Sweet spot for every beloved little speck You’ve created!
