Heavenly Father,
This past week, I have been fighting for my faith in You to win over the onslaught of reasons to fear. In the midst of ongoing pandemic news reports that are trying to cause everyone in the whole world to fear, we were told my husband had a substantial blockage to his heart which was life-threatening and need to be taken care of quickly. Having had my first husband die from his heart brought on by Lupus, and dear friends who died recently without warning, the arrows of fear started their non-stop barrage. Because of the pandemic, it took longer to set up a heart cath to take care of the blockage. In the meantime, my husband’s symptoms took a sudden turn for the worse. I truly wondered if he would even make it to the heart cath. So I fought through the attacks of fear about my husband’s life along with the worries about the pandemic with prayer and looking to You instead of the ways things look.

The more I looked to You, the more the fear lost its power. My husband’s symptoms hadn’t gone away. In fact, they looked worse. The pandemic hadn’t gone away. It loomed larger than ever, but as I praised You and shared with You, everything seemed like it would be OK no matter how things looked. Even if my husband died, I knew You were still Lord! Even if many in my large family have lost jobs or their businesses are highly affected by this pandemic…even if many of my friends and family work in the health care field during this risky time…even if my beloved family-in-Christ cannot gather to meet right now…even though leaders on all levels are having to make tough decisions that impact so many lives right now…even if I cannot hug those I love…even through suffering and death…

You are God! You reign victorious! You are doing great things! It may look like death and chaos and fear are running ramped, but when we stop and look to You, we realize all is well. It may still look overwhelming, but when we look to You and not at the way things look to our human eyes, it is incredible what we begin to see. By the time my husband’s heart cath was here last Monday, I had prayed almost non-stop. As I sat alone (yet with You) in the parking lot, I couldn’t even make myself work up a fear! Nothing had changed. My husband had scary symptoms all the way up to entering that building alone. But my faith was in You, O Lord! I was still more than surprised when the cardiologist called to tell me they found nothing worth even putting a stent in or anything else done to his heart. All the symptoms were gone after he came out! Praise You, Lord!!!

Help us all to walk through our faith in You and not by how things look all around us! You are doing a new thing in many lives! How I praise You!!!! When we are tempted to look at the way things look, help us fight through it to look to You instead!

Your Prayer Prompt-
Lord, help me to look to you no matter how menacing things look…

Glorious Heavenly Father,
We can never get to the bottom of Your love! Your love and power go far beyond what we could ever get away from. Your everlasting love fills every bit of heaven and earth and space itself. Your love created all that there is and ever will be. Your love knew us and thought of us long before we were even conceived. You have loved us for generations and will keep loving us for all eternity. You loved us before we ever took our first breath and will still be loving us when we take our last. You will love us when we no longer need breath—but will live on Your love alone. There is never a time You don’t love us even when we have not loved You…even when we have sinned against You. Your love is all-encompassing and bigger and mightier than we can ever comprehend.

You love us when we disappoint You, when we rebel against You, when we complain, when we hurt others whom You love…You love us when we neglect You, when we try to live our lives without You, when we think we know better than You, when we hear Your calling and turn our backs, when we think we have You all figured out, when we put our faith in other short-lived things besides You, when we love this world and all its temptations more than You, when we choose hate and judgement instead of love and grace, when we doubt our worth when You love us so much, when we believe in ourselves instead of Your eternal power and glory.

The only thing that blocks our receiving Your eternal love is our own selfish will which refuses to accept the eternal love You sent us through Jesus Christ. When we finally surrender our own selfish will and accept the greatest gift of love You’ve ever given in Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, our eyes are opened. We begin to see and believe in Your love. We can count on You, trust You, hold fast to You, Lord. Your love forgives us, renews us, restores us, teaches us, molds us, prunes us, holds us, guides us, corrects us, encourages us, emboldens us, empowers us, humbles us, works through us…

I will never ever stop discovering more of Your love. For all eternity, I will be falling more deeply in love with You, Lord. I can see Your Love because Christ lives in me and even loves through me. I can only love You because You loved me first. I can only love others because Your love lives and grows in me. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8) All love flows from You, Lord…and there is no end to who You are! How rich it is to live in Your eternal love. and to love You back with my feeble yet ever-growing love!

Your Prayer Prompt-
Father, I accept the love You gave me through Jesus Christ…Help me grow in Your love…

Most Glorious Heavenly Father,
How I love watching for You! Just in the last few days I’ve seen You in a tiny clump of yellow crocus in an expansive lawn of still-dormant grass…in the opening up of a traumatized friend…in families gathering together in love at the passing of family members…in friends gathering to help a widow…in a dove peering out of a bush right outside my window…in a granddaughter running up and practically jumping in my arms…in light whisp of clouds that I saw when I looked up- just like the ones in a very poignant 27-year old memory I had just written about…

Just in the last few days, though I have not seen Your face, I have seen You in the praise of one who has endured much…in laughter shared with a long-time friend…in contentment and rest in the soul of a mother who has worked extremely hard all her life…in the gratitude of someone You asked me to help…in the hope of spring coming again…in the cheerful morning praises sung by the birds…in the connection felt with a simple smile and greeting between strangers…in the healing of one who has been quietly grieving his wife for five long years…in the hope of a new marriage of two dear friends…in the waiting for a new baby soon to be born…

In just the last few days, I have seen You bring faithful believers to a state-wide gathering to pray for our state… in the fervent prayers of those praying daily on the sidewalk for the unborn and their parents…in the celebration of a dear friend from India who has faithfully poured out his life to thousands in his country and around the world…in his daughter who is willing to take up the vision and carry it on…in the sacrifice and love of young parents on behalf of their children…in the dedication of teachers in caring for their little ones…in my husband massaging my aching feet…

Just in the last few days, I’ve seen You in a couple who have run their family’s 102 year old business with Christ-like integrity and love as they handed it over to a new owner…in the life of two pastors’ wives who are recently widowed, still shining out with the same quiet faith and love for You which has been their life testimony…in the commitment of one friend caring for their aging friend…in a young sister-in-Christ quietly waiting and praying for guidance from You…

Father, I love to watch for You and there are so many more ways I have seen You in just the last few days…I can’t begin to imagine all You have done in my lifetime that I didn’t stop to notice. I will be watching and praising You for all eternity!

Your Prayer Prompt-
Heavenly Father, open my eyes as I seek You….

Heavenly Father,

Even though I was young, when I first heard Martin Luther King’s dream of all Your children playing and living together someday in peace, I knew this is how You want it to be. It sounded perfect, but like many dreams, it takes a lot blood, sweat and tears for it to come true. It often takes someone’s earthly life like it did Dr. King’s. In my lifetime, I have seen huge advances toward that dream becoming reality…and yet I don’t know that it will be fully realized in our present earthly lives. Our sinful nature finds too many reasons to prejudge by one another’s appearance, to be divided, and even to hate for the smallest differences.

Lord, You spell out Your own dream (actually a promise) in the last book of the Bible in Revelation 7:9—”After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.” You gave us a glimpse into the new heaven and new earth where all Your people are praising You in one voice—with one spirit—in one love. Jesus was willing to give up His life for our oneness with Him and with You, Lord.

Our love for You, as we more fully realize Your love for us, will spill over for love for one another. Oh Lord, how I long for that day! Just when I think I am making headway towards this fullness of love, You expose some way I still let something divide my love for others. Lord, Your love is pure, holy, perfect, all-encompassing—even for those who disrespect the very One who gives them everything—the very One who sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for us while we were full of sin. There is no greater love!

Father, I will not be able to end hate, prejudice, racial or other types of divisions here on earth, but I surely can let Your love rule in me. Here I am, Lord, will You continue to create in me a clean heart that loves the unworthy, those who hate me, those who hurt my loved ones, those who misjudge me, those who sin against You. Let my heart and spirit be one with You because of Jesus…and let me give others a glimpse of all Your people praising You in the white robes that only Jesus gives us as we acknowledge Him as our personal Lord and Savior.

Your Prayer Prompt-
Father, use me to help bring Your dream/promise of oneness of Your kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven…

Most Glorious Father,
How I love my quiet time with You. There can be sparks of war, reports of violence near and far, deaths of loved ones, misunderstandings, relationships divided or under attack, threats of bad health or uncertainty of finance…but when I come to You to simply be in Your presence, it all melts away in Your glory and peace. There are times, the attacks of bad news and the veil of darkness are so palpable that I have to fight my way to my sweet spot in You. But You are always there waiting for me to come. When I find my way to You through Jesus, I find all I need in You. Your quiet peace is so much more powerful than all the noise the blustery bullying that evil makes. Here I come once again to You, Lord!

You are and ever will be victorious over anything this world and darkness throws at us. All we have to do is be still and know that You are God! Father, You are fully aware of how weak we are, how vulnerable we are to the threats and attacks. How I thank You for all I have been through which has taught me over and over again, to come to You through Jesus Christ. Some days I just breathe and remain in You all day. Other times, the struggle is real and the attacks come from all directions trying to keep me from You.

Some days, it appears I have to fight to get to my sweet spot in You. At least that’s what the enemy wants me to think—that the battle is too big; that Your silence means You are gone—but You never leave me, Lord. I just need to place my focus, my hope, my life on You and Your presence once again. The best way I have found to fight my way to You is to be still, to praise You, to remember who You are, to seek You with all my heart, mind and strength—the Lord God who is over me and all that is. You are the One who commands heaven and earth. You are the One who loves me more than anyone else possibly could. You are the One who restores my soul, fills me with Your Holy Spirit, uses little ole me to defeat giants. You are the One who refreshes me in Your sweet presence even here on earth and who promises an eternal sweet spot with You that I will never have to leave! It seems a little silly to call You my sweet spot, Lord- I am but a beloved little speck in the vastness of Your Holy Presence! There is plenty of room in Your Holy Sweet spot for every beloved little speck You’ve created!

Your Prayer Prompt-
Father God, help me turn to You and find You….

Most Holy Father,
Almost twenty-seven years ago, my first husband died in my arms and was later “brought back.” That was a year before he passed and didn’t come back—when he finally went to his eternal home with You! This young man who was a gifted writer of songs, poems, and novels was at a loss for words when it came to describing heaven where he got a sneak preview. I was so hungry to know every detail—and all he could say was, “I never knew God gave so much when he gave His Son!”

I have pondered those words in my heart all these years and have asked You to show me something new about Your Son Jesus every Christmas and Easter season since. It seems there is no end to who He is…
JESUS is Your Son and yet He is in You and You are in Him! He does nothing without You. (John 10:30)
JESUS was with You in the beginning before all things were created. He brought life. (John 1:1-5)
JESUS was declared victor over sin by You from the beginning! (Genesis 3:15)
JESUS was hoped for all through the history of the Old Testament and the world. (Psalm 2:6-7)
JESUS came in Your fullness to be born as one of us in the humblest way to a simple peasant girl. (Luke 1:26-38)
JESUS came to bring peace between You and all who accept Him. (Luke 2:14)
JESUS was in spiritual warfare all his life (from Herod killing hundreds of baby boys- to leaders declaring him guilty and placing Him on a cross. (Matthew 2:13-18, 27:45-54)
JESUS willingly died on the Cross for us. (John 18:4-9; Matthew 26:50-54)
JESUS paid the price of our sin and overcame death because we cannot. (John 3:16-18)
JESUS died so we could live! (John 17:1-5)
JESUS lives in us when we are willing to die to ourselves. (John 17:25)
JESUS never leaves us alone. (Matthew 28:20)
JESUS prays for us now at Your right-hand, God, with the authority You have given Him! (Romans 8:34)
JESUS helps us personally overcome when we make Him our King! (John 16:33)
JESUS is always making us new along with our situations. (Revelation 21:5)
JESUS is preparing a new home for us and will come bring us there. (John 14:1-4)
JESUS is what life is all about! (John 14:6-7)

JESUS:
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
(Philippians 2:6-11)

Most Holy Father,

Can I dare say that I have identified with Mary many times in my life? Some may think that’s outrageous for me to say, but I know You know my heart, Lord…and I think that may be something that pleases You. In fact, maybe we all should expect Jesus like Mary did…

Mary was an ordinary peasant girl (like me) just going about her daily life when You sent the angel Gabriel to tell her she would give birth to Your Son. At first, she was frightened (as I can understand—fearing something in the spiritual realm as seen). Though Mary knew it seemed impossible to conceive a baby (let alone Your Son), she accepted the news and had faith it would happen because You sent Your word.

Very quickly, before telling anyone, before it even seemed real—she hurried to visit her cousin Elizabeth who lived in another town. The angel told Mary that Elizabeth was also going to have a baby very soon though they had no contact. When Mary greeted her cousin, the baby inside Elizabeth (John the Baptist who was to prepare the way for the Lord) leaped for joy (recognizing even in the womb that his Lord was there!) This is how I feel when You affirm a promise to me when I see no evidence yet! I certainly identify with Mary’s rejoicing praise in You. Do my little-fumbling-words-yet-heartfelt-praises stand for eternity as well?

Mary had to face many hardships from her own people- the initial abandonment from her Joseph, friends and family’s gossip and judgement, (yet You sent Joseph back to help her and he most certainly did), the long dangerous journey to Bethlehem, no place open to go through the labor of birth, the humbleness of giving birth to the Son of the Most High in the very lowest of places.

Father, I know what it is like to do what is utterly impossible for me to do on my own —to have Your Son be born in me, for my whole life to be changed from whatever little insignificant plans I might have had—to know the intimate blessing of His Spirit alive and moving in me—to know the pain yet immensely greater joy of carrying Jesus and sharing Your Son with anyone who is ready and willing to accept Your Son. Father, may we all be willing to be like Mary, and let Jesus grow and be glorified in our lives. In fact, let us go through this day expecting Jesus and watching Him move and live!

“But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.’ ‘How will this be,’ Mary asked the angel, ‘since I am a virgin?’
The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.’
‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’ Then the angel left her.”

Your Prayer Prompt-
Lord God, I am ready and willing to have Jesus born in me and carry him to the world…

Heavenly Father,
One of my favorite things is to tell of the wonderful ways I see You at work! Yesterday morning, I was teaching a very small preschool Sunday School Class (two rambunctious boys!) K was already in class feeling sorry for himself because there were no friends there. L came in late, making that loud gasping sound that results from sucking up huge sobs- which Is very unusual for this normally happy little boy. He sat at the table when K immediately began trying to comfort his little friend. L didn’t want a hug, or a smile or any other sweet attempts made by K. With all his heart, K wanted to help his friend not be so sad. I told him there are times we cannot do anything to help someone else- it has to come from God helping them…and they need to be willing to receive it. So I suggested we pray for God to help L with his sadness and to have joy. K asked what joy is to which I responded: a deep happiness that God places in our hearts when we are close to Him.

We proceeded with the lesson on the angel Gabriel telling Mary she was to give birth to a son who would be called Jesus. At first Mary was afraid, then surrendered to God, trusting He would do this. Later, Mary sang a song of great JOY because she realized how close the Lord was and how blessed she was! We then created paper angels with glittery halos and handprint wings to take home. Suddenly L jumped up from his seat and began dancing around the room with a huge smile on his face. He stopped in his tracks, looked surprised and announced, “I’m not sad anymore!” K and I looked at each other, and this wise little K said, “God answered our prayer! L has joy!”

Father, how can we ever thank You enough for bringing JOY to our world, which can often be dark and sad? How can we ever praise You enough for sending Jesus to draw us to a close relationship with You? Lord, we often want to help someone else overcome their sadness, stress, problems, deep hurts…but You are the only one who can bring true joy. Lord, help me stay close to You so I can pray for those who need Your Son Jesus Christ. Help me stay focused on life in You so I can be Jesus to others. Joy to the world! Let us all make room for him so our hearts can be transformed from a dark inn crowded with the world to a simple stable that shines out with the King of kings and Lord of lords. Joy to the world! The Lord still comes!

“The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. ” Luke 1:27-32 (Gabriel’s message to Mary)

“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” Luke 1:41-45 (cousin Elizabeth’s and her unborn baby John’s reaction to visit from Mary expecting Jesus)

Mary breaks out in joyful song in Luke 1:46-50
“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.”

Your Prayer Prompt-
Heavenly Father, turn my sadness to joy as I thank You for Jesus…

Most Glorious Father God,
I have a new view of the earth after flying from Dallas, Texas to India. The airline we flew overseas on had the most up-to-date personal screens in front of each passenger seat. The interactive cameras offered us a choice of watching camera views from the front, rear and underneath the plane from take-off to landing and everything in between. There was also a choice of different interactive maps so we could see where we were on the 15-hour flight—what countries or bodies of water we were flying over. It was our first time to fly across the world and we had no idea that we could watch the trip unfold through cameras and maps. Others might have watched movies but we were caught up in our flight.

The ground view is so different than that of high above the earth. At 40,000 plus feet we were flying high above the clouds. As we looked out the window at that altitude, all we saw was a lovely pure white blanket of clouds far beneath us. The screen also showed the temperature at that altitude which was at times listed at negative 80 degrees Fahrenheit. We could not have survived outside the shelter of that plane. The monitor listed the countries we were flying over at the time. We were visiting India which is exactly on the opposite side of the world from my home. India looks completely different than my home city. Yet I couldn’t help but wonder how each country I was flying over was so unique. Lord, it puts me in my extremely small place when I contemplate that You, Almighty God, created each land and every single individual living in those lands—that You are intimately involved in every single life that has surrendered to Your sovereignty and accepted Your gift of Jesus Christ.

I can fly high, close to You, because I am in Jesus and He is in me. You no longer see the dirty sinful nature I had- You see me being carried by Jesus, pure as those snow-white clouds. You have saved me through Jesus to soar high above the earth where I can never go on my own. I may be only one-in-a-billion people alive at this time, but I am precious to You. At times, it seems like just You and me. Other times, You give me a glimpse of who You are and how You reign high above the earth and the galaxies and heaven–how Powerful yet Tender, Righteous yet full of Mercy, Timeless yet there comes a time for each of us, in-control yet You give us free choice…You are our Creator, Sustainer, Provider, Savior, Lover, and Glorious God! Thank You. Lord God, for being able to soar safely with You high above the earth in Jesus’ tender care–now and forever!

Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? Your Prayer Peek-
Heavenly Father, what is my view of you…and of the earth?

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the timely phone call from a “Forever Sister” who called this morning. I was spending some quiet time with You when the call came. I didn’t recognize the number and started to ignore it, but there was a quiet nudging that said to answer. I answered it, half expecting a pesky sales call…but instead heard a familiar perky voice. This particular friend changes phone numbers almost as often as I change clothes so I did not recognize the number. I usually have to wait for her to call me (which is now about twice a year!) She was just one of a small group of ladies who met twenty years ago once a week to pray together.

We prayed during the attacks of 9-11 on our country (there is an awesome story about that!) We prayed for our children, most of who were still living at home. We prayed through heartaches, joys, challenges. We praised You, Lord! We prayed for one another, for our churches, our neighbors, our husbands, our families; we prayed for Your wisdom, patience, guidance, knowledge, healing; we asked for forgiveness and thanked You for blessings too many to list! We also learned to listen and pay attention to what You said to us through our prayer times. That ragtag group of women are forever bonded through our faith in You, Lord—though You have since led us each in separate ways.

Though we each miss those incredible times of coming together to You in prayer, we know full well that You are still answering those prayers we prayed to this day. In fact, today’s phone call was a yet another report on more of Your eternal healing we prayed for. Most of our children are grown and on their own and we see answered prayers through them and even in our grandchildren. You are using each of these willing women in so many ways today—though we are scattered.

As always, this ordinary phone call was such an encouragement to me. She reminded me how her life was changed because I prayed while putting out a sign in front of the church to come to a “Ladies’ Night of Encouragement.” Her life was changed by Jesus Christ because of that one prayer. Now there is a new group going out into another neighborhood placing gospel tracts on doors. I pray as I place each and every one. Someday, I know there will be another report of someone whose life is eternally changed. We are forever bonded through Jesus Christ! The day is coming when we will no longer be scattered but will be bonded in Your Holy presence forever!
