My Prayer Peek/ your prayer prompt [blessings in a pandemic]

Most Holy Father,

Over and over again, I hear how horrible this year has been…and I have to admit, personally it has been challenging with the loss of dear friends and family members (two due to suicide which carries it’s own heartbreak), loss of income, not being able to accompany family members or them with me in medical crisis, not being able to gather as a family, or even to worship as I am accustomed to. Yet, oh my sweet Lord, how I see You at work with blessings overflowing in the midst of what some are calling “the worst year ever.” Having gone through my share of many trials, I have to say, once again, Lord, You make beauty from ashes, and it is definitely true that You create good out of what seems the worst when we have eyes to see…

Some of the sweet blessings I see developing out of a year of world-wide pandemic include:

  • A slowing down of the fast-paced driven society that leaves little time for deepening relationships and simply enjoying one another.
  • Parents spending more time with their children with bike rides, walks, games, fishing and other non-stress activities.
  • With the real threat of death due to this virus, people are reviewing and simplifying their lives to savor the most important treasures which are relationships. Even the healthy are realizing today could be their last day. It changes the way we live.
  • More time to sit quietly and share all our heart with You, Lord, through prayer.
  • Letting go of things we have no control over and trusting You to make good come from our current situation—no matter how dire.
  • Learning to live with less since this pandemic has created a shortage of many things.
  • Holding our dear loved ones before You and realizing You love them even more than we ever could, and You want more for them than we could ever ask for or imagine.
  • Realizing You love us just because of who we are, and not for what we can do for You and Your Kingdom.
  • Believing that this dark and hopeless world needs the Light You give us through our relationship with Jesus Christ now more than ever. Our answer of hope, when we are hit with dark fear and hopelessness, does far more than we can imagine—even if we don’t see immediate results. The hope we share is eternal and stands for all time.
  • Doctors cannot save everyone, but You long to give us eternal life.
  • If and when I die from Covid-19 or any other cause- I know I will live forever with You! I am ready.

Thank You, Lord, for the countless rich blessings You are showering us with even in this horrible pandemic. Open our eyes to see them and thank You for them.

Your prayer prompt-

Father, open my eyes through Jesus Christ to see You and Your glory in the midst of ….

praise God
praise God

God is worthy to be praised

My Prayer Peek/your prayer prompt [power of praise]

Most Glorious Father God!

My prayers used to start out with desperate pleas to give me this or that or help me get out of another mess. There is nothing wrong with those frantic calls for help, for You most certainly answer them in some of the most unusual ways. But through the years, I have discovered the amazing power of praising You, Lord! It is not due to my eloquent or specific words. It is not about MY praising…it is because You are God and You are worthy of all our praise. When we turn our thoughts, minds and spirit to who You really are; as we seek some adequate way to praise Your greatness—something incredible happens…

Our pride, hurt feelings, fears, anxieties, plans, desire for control all melt away like mist in the glory of who You are! As we acknowledge Your Almighty power, Your reign over all, Your faithfulness, the fact that You govern heaven and earth and that all powers must answer to You, we are filled with the sweetness of Your joy and peace that signal our trust in who You are. ..as You call Yourself “I AM that I AM.”

You are far more wonderful than any words that we can express, yet we are the only ones who can express our personal praise to You- whether it be through music, dance, face down in submission and surrender. Worshipping You in spirit and truth is to recognize You know better than we do, that we belong to You forever and ever, that You loved us so much that You sent Jesus to die for our sins, that we can live with You  though we cannot see You, that You dwell in the praises of Your people, and that we can make it through whatever temporary trials this world offers as we travel in faith toward our everlasting Home with You. Then we will see You in all Your glory and our praises will be absolutely pure and a blessing to You, Lord. Help me praise You more even now- no matter what today looks like!

Your prayer prompt:

Most Holy Father God, I praise You for at least 10 things that describe who You are…

Heavenly Father,

I had no idea I had been that busy until everything in my life suddenly slowed down from this pandemic. It was a surprise to me to be still over an extended period of time. My life has always been extremely full of activity with a large family, an in-home business and other work, church activities, chores, errands…you name it. I began to notice a slight slow down as my family all grew up and had families of their own, then I began to see their activity levels soar. There is a definite adjustment to being still. I have always needed my quiet time with You, Lord, or I never could have survived all I have. Yet You have brought me and a lot of others to a new level of stillness with most of the world sheltering-in-place. Thank You for these still days…

We tend to want to fill our still days with any kind of noise or activity. It’s too quiet so we listen non-stop to any kind of media, music, or words. It’s too still so we run to find some new activity to fill up our time. We can find all kinds of ways to run from stillness. Oh! But, Lord, You wait quietly in the stillness to meet with us. What a treasure we find when we simply sit with You. We learn to listen to You. We get to know You. You restore us to that beautiful loving relationship as we quietly seek You.

Too often our busyness glorifies us. It is when we stop and are still with You that You can be glorified in us. Being still in Your presence  reveals the darkness that needs to be brought into Your light; You lovingly convict us of wrong attitudes and thinking; You let us know  when You have something for us to do or say, but it is not difficult for You give us all we need. Father, I am so at peace and content in this stillness. I pray that we all take advantage of these still days and seek You in the quietness where You will be found.

Your prayer prompt-

Father, help me learn to love being still with You…

Heavenly Father,

I know there is nothing new under the sun, but there seems to be a “new” movement to do away with any kind of history that offends someone, or to remove names of well-known people from the past who had any type of blemish on their record, or to find each and every mistake ever made by any person willing to serve in any type of public leadership. Do we really think there is anyone who is without sin? You have made it clear to us there is not one (except Jesus!) There is no perfect person and no perfect people or nation.

I am so thankful that the greatest history book ever written (the Bible) does not hide the weaknesses and mistakes of those who have lived before us. You are not afraid to show that You love to use people who have ugliness and sin in their past. You do not cover up very real sins, weaknesses and poor choices (such as murder, adultery, manipulation, idolatry, disobedience, rebellion, self-righteousness…the list goes on.) If we were to show only the best with our version of whitewashed history, we might all think we were capable of being our own god, of controlling our own eternal destiny, of changing the world with our own actions and willpower. If we try to clean up all our history, we might choose to idolize a human (with all their hidden sin).

It is vitally important that we face the fact of our ugly nature that has (and still is) holding others humans as slaves, attempting genocide to kill out whole people groups, not listening to the cries of the unborn- the poor- the oppressed, not caring for the elderly- widows and orphans, not working together with others to show mercy but demanding our own ways… We are sinful as individuals and as people groups. We are, far too often, quick to point out the sins of others while not acknowledging our own sin.

Thank You, Father, for sending Your One true perfect Son, Jesus Christ, the only One who was born human yet without sin. You sent Him to be born as one of us, tempted in every way. He was the only One worthy to die as a pure unblemished sacrifice to cover all our sins once and forever. Our sins may still be on record as far as the world is concerned, but when we believe and accept what only Jesus could do for us, Father- You see the holy purity of Your Son Jesus living in us. It is then, that You can use a surrendered soul with all their weaknesses and faults for Your glory. Yes, I too, am a sinner with a past who has been washed eternally clean with the sacred blood of Jesus Christ. I will be thanking You and praising You forever!

Prayer Prompt-

Father, I admit I am a sinner and need Your gift of eternal salvation through Jesus…

Heavenly Father,

There was a whole different standard of delivering the news when I was younger.  It might have been more boring, but reporters knew they had to have several sources to validate their facts before publicly broadcasting something as the truth. If something was reported as news, it needed to be substantiated before it could destroy someone’s life, or cause chaos and division. The more addicted our culture has become to drama and entertainment, the more “news reports” have evolved into rapid sound bites, quick clips, tainted and slanted opinions and analysis, and half truths or full-out lies designed to grab the largest audience. Apparently bad news gets a whole lot more attention than good news so our view of the world we live in can easily skewed and feel out of control and hopeless. Of course, we really do have to deal with the reality of bad news and good news…

The bad news is…there is a lot of real evil in this world—people will use, kill, abuse, destroy other people’s lives for their own selfish motives.  This world is full of lies, gossip, slander, malice and manipulation that will devour others.  There are wars, movements, groups, and individuals who stir up hatred and division and trouble. Innocent lives are killed, maimed, deeply wounded from disregard for anyone else. Suicide, depression and hopelessness threaten to drown out the goodness. The bad news is that we are all part of the bad news. There is not even one single solitary soul who is without sin. That means not one of is free from the penalty of sin which is death. Not even one of us will ever be holy and pure enough to live in peace with God Almighty forever. Now, that is BAD news! The worse news ever!

The GOOD News is that You didn’t leave Your people to self-destruct. Lord, You made a way where there was no way. You delivered the Best News ever when You sent Your own holy and pure Son Jesus to die so our sins are forgiven! Even though He was “God in the flesh,” He was also the Son of man, fully capable of sinning and yet He did not. He knew Jesus was the only One who could walk through this sinful world untarnished, able to resist temptation so He could be the perfect sacrifice for our sin. The Good news is it is finished and we are guaranteed eternal life with You where there will never be bad news at all. All we have to do is believe and accept the BEST GOOD NEWS ever. The bad news is we stand condemned by our own choice when we do not choose the Good News. Father, I will focus on the good news and report the truth to whoever will listen and accept.

“An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”   Luke 2:9-11

“You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.”   Acts 10:36

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.”   John 3:16-19

Your Prayer Prompt-

Father God,  am I still living under the bad news …or am I ready to listen and believe in the Best news ever?…

Most Holy Father God,

I do not trust my eyes. They tend to wander in their gaze. Something catches my attention and can lead me off course. My sense of balance depends on where I fix my gaze. I am one of those who, if I’m not careful, when I’m driving (or even walking), if I start looking at the scenery—my feet tend to follow the direction my eyesight is wandering to. I can easily trip or drive off into a ditch. If I watch worldly news, I can get caught up in the hopelessness of how things appear. If my eyes soak up too much social media, I began to see and believe what the enemy wants me to. Oh! But, Lord, when I look to You….

When I look to You, the dark clouds roll away! The problems of this life which completely obstruct my vision begin to vaporize as I gaze at Your glory! The funny thing is that I can’t truly see You with my weak human eyes; I have to look through faith at what my fleshly eyes can’t see. Yet I see so much more clearly when I do! Everything becomes much more clear and real—even more real than what I think I see in this world. But it is up to me to look towards You. Some days, I have to physically fight myself to turn my face back to You. I recall once, when I actually felt Your hand lift my gaze from despair toward You. But You want me to train myself to do it on a regular basis.

Today, I am purposely turning my eyes back to You! You are the Great I Am! You are true when lies abound. You are Beauty, Glory and Majesty. You reign above all else. You are the Beginning and the End because You are Eternal. You are the Light in utter darkness. You are Life and Love. You make life purposeful, full of goodness. You restore my soul. You are patient and tender-hearted towards my weakness. Everything changes when I look at You. I see You, this world and even all those around me through the loving eyes of Jesus Christ. One day, I will no longer need these weak unfaithful eyes to see You for all eternity…but for now, I will keep practicing turning my sight towards You. I love You, Lord!

Your Prayer Prompt-

Father, forgive my wondering eyes. Help me turn to seek You…

Most Gracious Heavenly Father,
This world is so noisy and full of chaos. Non-stop news consistently tries to rattle our nerves. Continuous conversations on social media and cell phones clamor for our attention and response. Deadlines, arguments over issues, conflicting reports, background noise, and earphones always filling our thoughts with subliminal messages. In fact, it seems most people are so used to noise, they feel uncomfortable with silence, but it can be soothing to the soul.

Even prayer can be so crammed with requests and words that we leave prayer before being still and ready to hear You, Lord. Forgive us for always be too distracted to sit and enjoy Your presence, for being so busy talking or writing our prayers that we never stop to listen to You. It is good to sing songs and praise You with loud cymbals and music, but we also need to just be quiet and still sometimes.

It is so sweet to simply sit outside in the quiet of the day and bask in Your glory, to soak up Your goodness, to savor Your company, and just know that You are God. I can spill out many words and when I slow down to take a breath, You can say so much in the silence.

Your peace pours over me and Your tender presence reassures me. You restore my soul as I simply revel in who You are. All the fears, worries and trials of this noisy life melt away in the stillness of Your quiet presence. All that vital information everyone else is screaming at me dissolves in the wisdom found in Your quiet presence. How I love You, Lord. You are the Maker and Sustainer of all. You know all things and have all we need. Help us be still and quiet so we can hear You above all the noise of this chaotic world.

Your Prayer Prompt-
Lord Jesus, help me be still…

Most Glorious Heavenly Father,
I grew up busy. Our family operated a huge greenhouse and nursery business so there was always a ton of hard work to do…plus the added activities of church, 4-H and school with lots and lots of meaningful volunteer work. Yet in all that busyness, I often felt Your still small voice calling me to be still and just be with You. As a young girl, I can still recall the peace of being outside and feeling Your breath in the wind circling round and caressing my face, or Your tender way of pointing out the incredible wonders You surrounded me with. Those were precious glimpses of my safe place in You!

Then I would get called back into the duties, chores and planning great projects in my daily life. There was always so much to do and it seemed not enough time to do it… so many deadlines, expectations and my own endless “to-do lists.” In most people’s eyes, I was an incredibly productive person…yet I still caught those sweet moments of pure peace where I could simply enjoy a simple walk in the country or sit still while others fished…moments where I could just be still in Your presence.

It seemed right at the peak of a very worthwhile ministry which involved sharing Your word with children all summer, unforeseen circumstances changed everything. Due to my young husband’s ever-increasing traumatic illness, we were called away from the world and shut up in our own home. I recall asking You why! It didn’t make sense to shut down what appeared to be a very effective ministry and lead us into virtual isolation. Yet the longer we went through the crisis, the more I needed You, the more I cried out to You, the more I lived for those times I could share it all with You—I found all I needed in my shelter alone with You.

There were times I fought against that long-extended isolation with You. The deeper the trauma became, the more I depended on my safe shelter in You. How I thank You, Lord, for sending Jesus so I can live with You now and forever more. The sacrifice of His pure blood has made it possible for me to come to You wherever I am, whatever is going on. You love me—not for how productive I am—but for who I am. You still send me out on missions, but it is a restful work that depends on You and the time I spend alone with You. I love You, Lord. You are my safe place and my life! Wherever you send me, I can shelter-in-place with You.

Good Friday Prayer Watch

Friday, April 10, 2020

It is our deepest prayer that this Good Friday Prayer Watch will draw You closer to our Heavenly Father. Use this specific time to set aside just for Him. The world has been almost stopped by this pandemic. Maybe it is time for us all to stop, be still and know that The Lord is our God. We know that as we draw close to Him, He will reveal Himself to us. He said that when we seek Him, we will find Him! Let this be your time to seek Him!

When we have set up the Good Friday Prayer Watch before, a special room was set up for people to pray in without disruption. One of the things that has made the Prayer Watch special is shutting yourself up away with the Lord with no interruptions. Because of the Pandemic, it will be up to you to set aside a specific place where you can be alone with the Lord. It might be in your backyard, in your bedroom or by the lake. Print off or take the prayer guide with you. Let others in your family know not to bother you…or do this as a family with no talking between one another. This is between you and God.

Feel free to stand up and walk around to pray, or kneel before the cross. You may want to take communion with our Lord. You may want to pray out loud or sing! You may want to lay flat on the floor on Your face before God. Or all of these! It’s OK! This is precious holy time you are devoting just to be with your Lord.

Have a very blessed Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday and an ever-growing prayer life with our Lord!

Praising a Victorious Lord!

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. …” Matthew 5:13-16

Forgive me, Lord, for listening to too many other people, books, media, peer pressure, and information instead of consistently being still with You and waiting for You. What can I give up to have more time being quiet with You….

“Be Still and know that I am God!”

Heavenly Father,
This past week, I have been fighting for my faith in You to win over the onslaught of reasons to fear. In the midst of ongoing pandemic news reports that are trying to cause everyone in the whole world to fear, we were told my husband had a substantial blockage to his heart which was life-threatening and need to be taken care of quickly. Having had my first husband die from his heart brought on by Lupus, and dear friends who died recently without warning, the arrows of fear started their non-stop barrage. Because of the pandemic, it took longer to set up a heart cath to take care of the blockage. In the meantime, my husband’s symptoms took a sudden turn for the worse. I truly wondered if he would even make it to the heart cath. So I fought through the attacks of fear about my husband’s life along with the worries about the pandemic with prayer and looking to You instead of the ways things look.

The more I looked to You, the more the fear lost its power. My husband’s symptoms hadn’t gone away. In fact, they looked worse. The pandemic hadn’t gone away. It loomed larger than ever, but as I praised You and shared with You, everything seemed like it would be OK no matter how things looked. Even if my husband died, I knew You were still Lord! Even if many in my large family have lost jobs or their businesses are highly affected by this pandemic…even if many of my friends and family work in the health care field during this risky time…even if my beloved family-in-Christ cannot gather to meet right now…even though leaders on all levels are having to make tough decisions that impact so many lives right now…even if I cannot hug those I love…even through suffering and death…

You are God! You reign victorious! You are doing great things! It may look like death and chaos and fear are running ramped, but when we stop and look to You, we realize all is well. It may still look overwhelming, but when we look to You and not at the way things look to our human eyes, it is incredible what we begin to see. By the time my husband’s heart cath was here last Monday, I had prayed almost non-stop. As I sat alone (yet with You) in the parking lot, I couldn’t even make myself work up a fear! Nothing had changed. My husband had scary symptoms all the way up to entering that building alone. But my faith was in You, O Lord! I was still more than surprised when the cardiologist called to tell me they found nothing worth even putting a stent in or anything else done to his heart. All the symptoms were gone after he came out! Praise You, Lord!!!

Help us all to walk through our faith in You and not by how things look all around us! You are doing a new thing in many lives! How I praise You!!!! When we are tempted to look at the way things look, help us fight through it to look to You instead!

“Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 5:6-8

“God looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.” Psalm 53:2

“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life–of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1
