Heavenly Father,
Yesterday was another one of those days every Oklahoman experienced an advanced crash course in meteorology with a week’s worth of warning that everything was lining up to the highest risk of violent tornado possibilities. It was only three years ago on this same date that disaster struck a local school killing students and teachers. Most schools were closed. Businesses closed early. Everyone was glued to a day of watching the storms develop. Yesterday morning, I was getting my work done early before the time everything was predicted to fire up. Ironically, my job entailed writing about tornados and storm shelters. What an eerie mixture of feelings.

Lord, I just want to thank You for calming the storms along the dangerous line where super cells were predicted to spawn huge killer tornados. The storms were indeed spectacular with multiple wall clouds and tornados…but the dangerous vortexes all stayed small and didn’t stay on the ground long—though the entire state was covered with spinning powerful super cells. Now we are dealing with the record flooding which was predicted. Our drought-prone state is not used to dealing with flooding rescues but they are happening all over. One girl was found safe and is now at home after being caught in raging flood waters for nine hours over night!

Father, what a mighty display of Your power held back. Sometimes we need a reminder of who You are…and our dependence upon You. We get so occupied with our earthly lives that we forget, this is not our real life. We were created to live forever with You. This life and all the material things we hold so tightly to can be gone in an instant. Cars are a loss. Homes are flooded or destroyed. Livestock, crops and barns stand underwater. Roads are washed out.

Father, sometimes it takes a brush with danger or even death before we fully realize You are the giver of life—that this life could end in the blink of an eye—that our real lives are hidden with You—that we depend on You alone… Thank You that a set of my precious little grandkids, who without prompting yesterday, woke up singing “My God is so big, so strong, and so mighty. There’s nothing my God cannot do!” They repeated it over and over and brought a miraculous calm to their mom who has always been terrified of storms.
Father, thank You for Your peace that goes before and after the storm but even carries us through the storm.

“Then the Lord answered Job out of the storm. He said, ‘Who is this who darkens My counsel with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me. Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell Me if you understand…What is the way to the place where the lightening is dispersed, or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth? Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderstorm, to water a land where no man lives, a dessert with no one in it, to satisfy a desolate wasteland and make it sprout with grass?…Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God’s dominion over the earth? Can you raise your voice to the clouds and cover yourself with a flood of water? Do you send the lightening bolts on their way? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’? Who endowed the heart with wisdom or gave understanding to the mind?” Job 38:1-4,24-27, 33-36 (Read all of chapters 38-41 for God’s longest recorded statement which will blow you away!)

Prayer Prompt-
Lord, let me meditate on Your power and dominion and realize my great need for You…

Heavenly Father,
As I sit during my quiet time with You, we are getting more rain this morning. Yesterday, I tried to hurry up and plant a few more plants in between rains. As I look out the window at my extra lush green lawn and thriving flowers and landscape, I see once again how everything depends upon You and Your life-giving Spirit.
I could plant things all I want, but if there was no rain and sunlight from You, they would shrivel up and eventually die—even with my meager attempts to water. (Besides that, where would the plants and water and sunshine come from in the first place. Even more, there would be no me without You!)
You, in all Your life-giving glory, pour out Your love to create me and everyone else. You place us in this spectacular garden called earth and pour down all we need to flourish. The hard seasons simply cause new life to develop and grow. We could not live without Your rain pouring down on us. Bringing us back to life. Restore and refresh us.
That’s why I love to be still in Your presence. I love to let Your Spirit rain down and renew me. I love to know it is Your life that I soak up and causes my roots to grow deep in You. I know that my feeble and insane attempts to produce new growth will not last. They are like cut flowers that might look good for a bit, but will not grow and produce everlasting fruit.
Father, rain down in me in my quiet times with You. Forgive me when I try to tell You what my flowers and fruit should look like. Let me just look to You and soak You up so Your life will flow through me and I will produce what You create in me. Let me sing to You in the rain because You reign!

“He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then He said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ He said to me,’ It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.’” Revelation 21:5-6

“The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ Whoever is thirsty. Let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.” Revelation 22:17

“Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.’” John 7:37-38

Your Prayer Prompt-
Lord, let me be still and soak up Your presence…

Heavenly Father,    I’ve survived a lot of storms in my life, most not related to weather. I see so many who I love and care about going through their own storms of different kinds right now. I cannot take their storm away, but I can urge them to take shelter. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been thinking and writing about tornado shelters lately since my son and his friends are kicking off a new type tornado shelter on a national television show this weekend. Maybe it’s because Spring weather and tornado season are approaching. But this morning, my thoughts were on where we go for shelter during the small and major storms of life.

Seasoned Oklahomans know to keep alert during weather which can produce possible devastating tornados. They can do nothing to prevent those furious winds from coming but they know to take shelter when it happens. This life will definitely have its share of storms. The majority of Oklahomans have ridden out some major weather in some sort of “safe room” while the winds, lightening, hail rage all around. We all know that some shelters are safer than others.

My shelter has been tested. Each time I have gone through a storm, I have run to Your strong tower, Lord! I don’t have to worry about driving to it, that it may already be filled, that I will be caught out in the open…Wherever I am , whatever is going on, whatever the attack is, no matter how powerful and overwhelming the storm is, I have found refuge, peace and strength. When I feel the most vulnerable, in the greatest danger, too weak to handle what I see…I can immediately find shelter in You, Lord. There have been many times I tried to ride out the storm on my own, and I was overwhelmed by its power and strength. But as soon as I call out to You and begin praising You in the storm, the storm either becomes quiet or I find the sweetest peace with You in the midst of the raging storm.

The way to shelter with You is to call out the name of Jesus, realize Your sin against Him, Your need to be saved, and believe that Jesus is the door to everlasting shelter with You, Lord. As I begin to sing praises to You for being the Most High, for being stronger than whatever life blows my way, for trusting You will cause goodness out of the devastating blows- I know I am standing safely with You in the calm of the eye of the storm. Let the winds blow. Let the lightening crash and the hail come—for I am with You and all is well. How I want everyone to find this same shelter! I cannot drag them; they each must turn to You themselves.

“Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; hear me and answer me/ My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught…I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm.”  Psalm 55:1,2,8

“For You have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. I long to take dwell in Your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of Your wings.”  Psalm 61:3-4

“One day Jesus said to His disciples, ‘Let’s go over to the other side of the lake.’ So they got into a boat and set out. As they sailed, He fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in grave danger. The disciples went and woke Him saying, ‘Master, Master, we’re going to drown!’ He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided and all was calm. ‘Where is your faith?’ He asked His disciples.”  Luke 8:22-25

Prayer Prompt-

Father, are You my shelter? Do I trust You in the storm?

Heavenly Father, I didn’t ask for this amazing answer to prayer but You gave me a glorious overwhelming glimpse yesterday. It happened to be 26 years ago that my first husband Steve died yesterday. Most years Jan 13 comes and goes quietly and softly but I felt moved to post one of his hundreds of poems on Facebook in honor of his heavenly birthday. When I went to pick the poem out, I thought I would be posting one on death and heaven; instead You led me to pick one out on finding new life in the Lord. It was so appropriate after all he did and wrote about life with You. I added a simple line above the post that stated “He’s still pointing people to the Lord.”

Little did I know, You would show me how much has happened since that poem was written. Never had I known anyone who lived so fully yet suffered so deeply in 37 years of life. About 2-3 years before his death, he told me he was going to stop praying for healing. I was shocked and asked “Why?” He said You told him if he was willing to go through this, it would help many people in the future. He was willing. And he did truly suffer. Lord, You were faithful to give him what he needed through the horrific times. You gave him visions and dreams to encourage him. Some of those included actual people who would be helped in the future. You even allowed him to “die” and go before Your throne where he had the choice to come back and be put on life support or stay. Oh, how he wanted to stay—but out of love, he chose to come back to live another important year. (That’s a whole other story.)

Yesterday, my pastor was preaching on “The Power of Suffering” and it might as well been about Steve. You gave me a glimpse of the lives that have been and are still being impacted because of his suffering—family members, church family, and a huge amount of other people that You showed him in a vision including specific people he had never met (some who hadn’t even been born yet). I was the one who got to see some of these specific lives be transformed by Jesus Christ.

Father, thank You for this glimpse of what a single life surrendered out of love for You and others can do throughout eternity. I don’t want to waste whatever amount of time I might have left here on this earth. Help me surrender my moments to You so You can use them for Your eternal plan.

“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when His glory is revealed.”  1 Peter 4:12-13

“If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.”  1 Corinthians 13:3

Prayer Prompt-

Father, show me what I need to surrender to You out of love…

Heavenly Father,              I was all settled in my cozy precious quiet time with You—ready to share with You, my nearest and closest companion who has always been with me and has never left me…when I was overcome with WHO YOU ARE!!

YOU-who created the galaxies near and far which seem to go on forever- the more we discover, the more we discover Your vast presence and power!

YOU- who made and tenderly cares for that tiny little bird outside my window who sings for joy in the middle of winter!

YOU-who makes the sun rise and set on us, who gives us air to breathe, water to live and hearts with the capability to love.

YOU- who reigns over all heaven and earth, the One whose holy kingdom endures and is victorious over all kings, presidents, wars, genocides, disease, death and the power of evil and hell.

YOU-who has all angels, spiritual beings and every living thing under Your control yet created us to have the choice of whether to love and worship You or not.

YOU- who though every single one of us sin and rebel against You, sent Your own Son Jesus Christ to live a holy life here as one of us—yet without sin—so HE could die for our sins- the only One worthy in all history to save us.

YOU- the One who waits patiently for us to personally accept Jesus’ life, death and resurrection so we can only begin to know who YOU really are!

YOU- the One whose spirit lives in me because of Jesus, who I can share life so intimately with; who I can share my thoughts, fears, joys, requests knowing YOU are with me, leading me!

YOU- the ONE I am overcome with—How is it that You would care about me?! That YOU would love me enough to humble Yourself and die for me so I could live with YOU forever! And not just me…but each of my family, friends, co workers and every single person YOU ever created!

Most Holy Father, I choose to come to YOU in worship and love today because YOU love me and because of who YOU are!

“Praise the Lord, all you nations; extol Him, all you peoples. For great is His love towards us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!”  Psalm 117

“I will exalt YOU, my God, the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever. Every day I will praise YOU and extol Your name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom.”   Psalm 145:1-3  (Written by “powerful” King David)

Prayer Prompt-

Father, give me the eyes of Jesus to see who YOU are…

Heavenly Father,

I am getting ready to go vote for the offices and questions on my ballot. I know my little vote counts. I realize that there have been many deaths and other sacrifices throughout our country’s history to guarantee that I continue having the right to go fill in those blank spaces on a ballot. Yet, my one single vote goes much further than I can imagine. It is important that I study and vote to keep that right and others safe for my grandchildren and generations to come.

It is easy to get caught up in all the rhetoric, arguments, power struggles over these elections which culminate today. The choices I make are important—so important that I dare not make them without bowing before You, the highest authority. You get my vote first of all. I come to acknowledge that You created all that there is. There is no other higher power or authority on earth or in the heavenly realm. No one voted You into Your position. You are the Great I AM! Nothing can change that. You always have been and always will be. Nothing that was made was made without You, Your Son and The Holy Spirit. You could be a tyrant and wield Your almighty power without giving us a say. Yet, in Your perfect plan, You created us with a free will—with the freedom to choose You or not. Each of us has rebelled against You and sinned against You, yet You still sent Your own Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins and raised Him victorious over death and sin so we could freely choose You or not choose You. His blood was shed so I could choose.

I want You to know that I choose You, Your Son and the Holy Spirit. You are my King above all earthly kings, presidents, judges, legislators, commissioners, governors. Whoever I vote for today (and I ask Your wisdom in selecting who I vote for) will be here today and gone tomorrow. But You, O God, reign forever and ever. Thank You for the incredible sacrifice You gave so I could freely choose. I choose You for my God, my King, My everything—and I pray that my choice has an eternal impact on everyone around me for generations to come.

“They lay their crowns before the throne and say, ‘You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being.’”   Revelation 4:11

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”  John 3:16-18

“This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to His voice, and hold fast to Him.”  Deuteronomy 30:19-20

Prayer Prompt-

Heavenly Father, let me choose You and Your Son Jesus Christ on this day…

Heavenly Father,

As I sit with You this morning, I realize how very full my life is…not because of what I have…not because of what I have accomplished…not even because of where I am in my life. It is overflowing because I have You—and You have me.

You have always been with me—through every season and storm in my life. You have never ever left me. You have been right here- encouraging me, pushing me, comforting me, leading me, protecting me (mostly from myself), providing for me (in big ways and small delightful ways). At different times in my life, I have been more aware of Your presence than at others. Too many times, I have veered off my own way trying to make things happen the way I think they should, trying to prove how capable I am, falling into the trap of fear and worry, wishing I had what someone else has… Yet because I accepted the sacrifice of Your own Son Jesus for my life, You never let me wander too much. You call me back to You. I find much more than I need in You!

I purposely come to You before I get too far in my day because I have discovered my life is full and has meaning only when I stay with You. I was made for You. My soul is not complete without You. I am so weak without You. Yet I am full and strong when I am with You. Anything I might try to do without You is short-lived and meaningless. It can even be damaging. But when I am with You—when I surrender myself and whatever situation I might be facing to You—it becomes kingdom worthy. Only when I bring things to You can You truly work in and through me. That’s so fulfilling.

You, Lord, are what fulfills me. And when I am fulfilled, I can love others better. I see more and more blessing all around. It just keeps getting better and better. And I still have all eternity to know and love You more! Maybe that’s why I will someday have to have a new body—this one just can’t handle Your filling me up too much more!

“And God placed everything under His feet and appointed Him to be head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him, who fills everything in every way.”  Ephesians 1:22-23

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”  Romans 15:13

“Praise be to His glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and amen.” Psalm 72:19

Prayer Prompt-

Fill me up, Lord…

Most Gracious Heavenly Father,

Lately, I have realized how often I say, “Just a minute!”—to the children I care for when they call my name, to my husband when he needs my help, to my grandkids who want my attention, to the phone or the doorbell when they ring (even though they can’t understand me!) A minute is only 60 seconds—just one out of the 1440 minutes/86,400 seconds during one day. I wonder how often I spend just one minute praising You, Lord—not asking for something, whining about something—simply praising You for who You are and letting You know how much I love You! Here’s one minute of praise to my awesome God who is unlimited by time in His thinking of me:

You are forever eternal yet You cherish tiny little moment-in-time me and it was most important to You to make a way for me to spend all eternity with You…Just by Your word, You set galaxies into motion and created this special place called earth for us…You created all the magnificent animals and ocean creatures as well as every miniscule atom and cell…You personally knit us each together in our mother’s womb using DNA and things we will never fully understand though we try…You know each thought and action, even those we attempt to hide from ourselves and others—yet You love us anyway…You sent Your own perfect and holy Son Jesus for the sole purpose of taking all our sin upon Himself and taking the death penalty for the sins we committed so we could have His pureness and holiness and live forever in glorious eternity with You…Father, You are patient to hold back judgement to give each of us a chance to choose Life with You through Jesus…It is part of Your great love and plan to allow us freedom to choose…Now that I have chosen eternal life with You, I can’t imagine why anyone fights against it; there is so much more freedom in Christ!…

Father, You reign high above all there is in heaven, on earth and under the earth, yet in Your wisdom, You allow us to choose who/what to worship…There is no king, president, organization, nation, earthly or spiritual power that does not answer to You…If we go through any type of fire, You are with us—now and forever…You promise a coming life where we will see You face to face and all sin, darkness, fear, evil will be completely dispelled in the Light of Your presence…You, Lord, hold all my moments and my days (both in this life and my coming life where there will be no need for moments), I want to spend more minutes here on earth praising You!

“What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short.”  1 Corinthians 7:29

Jesus’ prayer recorded in John 17:1-3  “After Jesus said this, He looked toward heaven and prayed: ‘Father, the time has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may glorify You. For You granted Him authority over all people that He might give eternal life to all those You have given Him. Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.’”

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”  1 Timothy 1:17

Prayer Prompt-

Lord God, I want to spend a minute praising You…

Heavenly Father,

It’s easy to fall prey to sadness when it is gloomy outside. I am usually a very upbeat person (even being accused of always seeing the bright side) but everyone faces storms and cloudy days—even if it is only seen by one’s self on the inside. My brother takes amazing daily photos of the sunset on the lake by his house. It is the same exact lake view, but not one of his hundreds of photos are ever the same. Some are made up of glorious vibrant colors that take your breath away. Others are dark and gloomy. The lake is the same. Trees have not moved. The sun still sets in the west. Some days there are clouds, birds, or people in the photo; other days there’s nothing in the photo but the water and sky. The weather can affect our view. Our mood can make a difference in what we see. Too much on our minds; the stress of trying to control our circumstances; worries and fears can all attempt to blind us to the glory all around us.

That’s why, though I might feel gloomy tis morning, I still come to praise You through the grey skies. All may seem dreary—but when I purposely begin to turn to You, calling out to You, praising You for who You are, my view changes. When I stop to remember that You, alone, are God Almighty; that You are the Creator and Designer of all there is; that You hung the sun, stars and entire galaxies into place and cause them to stay there; that You are still the same glorious God though I cannot see You at the time; that You are still shining just as brightly as ever.

As I praise You, my Eternal, Everlasting, Majestic, All-Powerful, tender, merciful, Righteous, Holy, comforting, True, Faithful, Forgiving, Expectant, Constant through the Ages, Victorious, Most High God—there is a little part in the clouds and a ray of Your glory shines down on me. You sustain me, encourage me, direct me, guide me, restore me, refresh me, heal me… Most of all, the sweet joy of Your presence melts away the greyness in my spirit. Once again, I know that You are still God. There is no darkness or hopelessness in You at all. Though there might be some grey days here on earth, the time is coming when I will see you in all Your glory. My view of You will be unhampered by the clouds of this life. When I praise You, I get a sneak peek of Your glory!

“Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” John 1:4

“You, O Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.”  Psalm 18:28

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.”   Matthew 6:22-23

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” John 8:12

Prayer Prompt-

Most Holy Father, am I looking to You or something else?

Glorious Father,

Anything that is living is always changing. It never stands still. A favorite saying in Oklahoma is “If you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes. It will change!” That’s not only true for the weather, but for life itself. We are always going through different seasons in our lives. Whatever we have gone through in our past has already happened. We may not be able to change that, but when You are made the very center of our lives, You take all the good, the bad and the ugly and turn it into something glorious as we hold it before You. All praise and glory to You, Father! The hurts, pains, disappointments, mistakes, sins, abuse, darkness do not have to hold us captive all our lives. Through Jesus Christ, we are made free and You carry us from glory to glory into the next season of our lives! Thank You that my life did not stand still in darkness!!

Whatever I am facing right now will not stay this way. Whether it feels like a blessing or an overwhelming trial. Each moment is to be savored for it will never be exactly like this again. Babies grow up. (Sleep will come again). The “terrible twos” do not determine that child’s future personality. You can carry on deep conversations with teenagers one moment and be stabbed in the heart by their words the next. Your parents can be strong and invincible one moment, and frail and vulnerable the next. No one but You, Lord, knows when our last earthly breath will be, so help me to enjoy this particular moment which will never happen again. It is precious (even when it happens to be painful) for You are making something beautiful through every single moment we live with You.

You are the only One who holds the future. I might as well not dread it, for what I fear may never even happen…and if it does happen, You will be at work in that particular moment as well. You love me with Your perfect love and I can completely trust You for this particular moment and for all eternity! Life circumstances, the people in my life, my health, my plans, my dreams—are all always changing. But all is well because, You, my Loving Lord, never change! You are God and I bow before You in ever-growing love and adoration!

“I the Lord do not change.”    Malachi 3:6

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights who does not change like shifting shadows.”     James 1:17

“And He (Jesus) said, ‘I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.’”  Matthew 18:3-4

Prayer Prompt-

Father, do I trust You through all changes?….
